Creating the backplate of the keychain is as simple as dragging a Box from the right panel and dropping it on the workspace, adjusting its size by typing the dimensions in the appropriate fields it’s also possible to drag the corners and edges of the Box to adjust the size and shape. But since that’s not available, we’ll have to model the keychain from scratch. If you have a good SVG file, this tool works well. I tried running the logo through an online SVG converter and the results were imperfect extruding the converted SVG file in Tinkercad resulted in this object.Ĭlose but no cigar. Tinkercad does have an SVG Extrude tool but we don’t have an SVG file of the logo. To demonstrate the differences between the two, I designed the same part (a keychain, of course) in both applications and then explored some of their unique tools and capabilities. There’s a lot going on under the hood of Fusion360, so it’s intended for more experienced users, or at least those aspiring to become more experienced users. Beyond 3D modeling, it also includes workspaces for 3D sculpting (labeled Create Form in the software), sheet metal fabrication, rendering, animation of assemblies and operations, manufacturing with CNC machines and lathes, and simulations of static and nonlinear stress, thermal stress, structural buckling, and shape optimization. Several tutorials are available to guide new users through their first models.įusion360 is a desktop 3D modeling program that uses cloud computing to assist with heavy computational loads like simulations. Tinkercad employs a drag-and-drop method of combining basic 3D shapes to build more complex objects, making it one of the simplest 3D modeling options available. Its focus is on education and encouraging thinking in terms of three dimensional objects and their relative sizes, positions, and orientations. It’s designed to allow anyone to start making 3D models, featuring an intuitive browser-based interface that can be controlled entirely by a mouse. Tinkercad is catered towards younger users and those with no modeling experience. Two of those options are Tinkercad and Fusion360, both of which are Autodesk products and free (to students, hobbyists, and small businesses). Now is the best time to learn how to 3D model because never before have so many powerful 3D modeling options been available for free. To unlock the full potential of any 3D printer, it’s necessary to know how to model. Every model in every online repository was modeled by someone, somewhere.

Ideas like this were still fashionable into the twentieth century. Remember that Environmental determinism is the idea that a particular landscape necessarily produces a certain kind of people. These ideas would now be considered environmentally deterministic. The ideal place (which coincidentally was his own place) was in the middle of the known world and produced the best kind of people. He believed that cold places produced emotionally distant people, and hot climates produced lazy, lethargic people. In the book On Airs, Waters, and Places, the Greek philosopher Hippocrates wrote that different climates produced different kinds of people. Humans have been thinking about the relationship between people and their environments for a considerable amount of recorded history. Cultural ecology refers to the types of landscapes created by the interaction of people and their physical environment. This relationship is reciprocal culture adapts to a particular place, and that place is changed by people. The relationship between people, their culture, and the physical landscape is known as human-environment interaction. In order to live in places a different as these, humans have needed to adapt their lifestyles. These are landscapes that have been formed over thousands, if not millions of years by forces of nature. The physical landscape consists of places like the Appalachian Mountains that stretch across a large portion of North America, the Mongolian-Manchurian grasslands, the Amazon river basin, or any other environment. Either way, cultures influence landscapes and in turn landscapes influence cultures.įigure 4.5 | Culture-Landscape Relationship For urban cultures, those resources can either be local, or they can be products brought from great distances. In the case of rural cultures, those resources tend to be local. Cultures’ beings rely on natural resources to survive. Victron Energy BMV-702 – Basically it’s nearly identical totheLinkPro but lacks automatic CEF calculations.MasterVolt BTM-III – Very powerful, attempts to estimate state of charge for aux banks without a shunt.Xantrex LinkPro – Very powerful, seems to be sort of the gold standard. So with the above list I pulled together a short list of candidate units (6 models to be exact, that was quickly reduced to 3 models) Reasonable cost – another requirement needing little explanation.Auto-sync with charge cycles – If I have to push a button to tell the monitor the batteries have been charged, it will never know.# of cycles – tracking history of the batteries.Aux battery voltage – primarily want to be able to do some simple monitoring of the engine start battery.% state of charge – assuming this is accurate, it would make it easier to know when to charge.Ampere-Hours used – pretty much the primary thing I want to know for planning upgrades.Charge efficiency factor (CEF) – compensates for losses related to charging.Peukerts exponent – compensates for effects on battery capacity due to different rates of discharge.Important features for a battery monitor: I also was able to put together a list of features that would make a battery monitor both useful and accurate. As I did some my research I came across a few other options including units from Blue Sea Systems, MasterVolt, and Victron Energy. When looking for a digital battery monitor, obviously there’s the venerable Xantrex Link line of monitors starting with the now discontinued Link 10 to the also discontinued Link 10 and 20, and now the current LinkLite and LinkPro offerings. Unfortunately the single analog amp-meter was not cutting it for that, so a more sophisticated digital amp-hour meter was needed. But before I can really make any concrete plans, I need a way to measure our capacity consumption. Having to charge batteries 2-3 times a day was not ideal so I’m looking at ways to both increase the capacity of the house bank and decrease the electrical loads. Since our trip through the San Juan’s in August I’ve been reviewing all the systems onboard and researching energy efficiency options. Along the way, it gradually evolved from an arcade game into something that required as much thought as reflexes the levels just kept getting more and more complex.Īccording to Smith, it was his eight-year-old nephew who convinced him to port the game to the Apple II having visited the computer lab once or twice and seen it in action there, the little boy was decidedly eager for a version he could play at home. Soon students were coming by only to play Kong Lamont claims that “a ‘show process’ command would often report 80 percent of the users running ‘graph.'” Eager players began to queue up behind the university’s computer terminals, and Kong became a fixture of campus life, the University of Washington’s equivalent of what Zork had once been at MIT. With its captive audience of playtesters in the form of the students who hung around the computer labs, the game grew organically as the weeks passed. “‘Graph’ would prompt the user for a function,” remembers a fellow student named Rick LaMont, “then crap out unless the secret password was entered to play Kong.” The group hid their game from the university’s administrators by embedding it into an otherwise broken graphing program. Armed only with a pick axe that was more tool than weapon, you must steal all of the gold that was lying around the place, whilst avoiding or delaying the guards who protected it, generally by digging pits into which they could fall. In Kong, you guided a little man through a single-screen labyrinth of tunnels linked by ladders, implemented entirely using monochrome textual characters your man was a dollar sign, your enemies paragraph symbols. When their fellow students started to show some interest in what they were doing, they made the game publicly available. Bratsanos had first created Kong the previous year on one of his high school’s Commodore PET microcomputers, and the two were now in the process of porting it to one of the university’s DEC VAX-11/780 minicomputers. Meanwhile he had a part-time job in one of the university’s computer labs, where he met two other students named James Bratsanos and Tracy Steinbeck, who were tinkering with a game they called Kong, a not so-thinly-veiled reference to the arcade hit Donkey Kong. In late 1981, Doug Smith was studying architecture and numerical analysis at the University of Washington in Seattle. He is the author of, among others, The Secret Library: A Book-Lovers’ Journey Through Curiosities of History and The Great War, The Waste Land and the Modernist Long Poem. The author of this article, Dr Oliver Tearle, is a literary critic and lecturer in English at Loughborough University. Yet many of its features are surprising ones to find in children’s fairy tales, and raise questions about how far back in our cultural ancestry, and our development of the notion of ‘the child’, the story of ‘Rapunzel’ actually has its roots.Ĭontinue to explore the world of fairy tales with these classic Victorian fairy stories, the history behind the ‘Puss in Boots’ fairy tale, the story of the frog prince, and the origins of Beauty and the Beast. What makes the story so memorable is its embodiment of many of the motifs and features we most commonly associate with fairy tales: the damsel in distress, the wicked witch or evil stepmother, the handsome prince, the child being given up in a weird bargain. There are also parallels with the story of Saint Barbara, whose father imprisoned her in a tower according to one account. Everyone learns a valuable lesson – one supposes.Īs with another Grimm fairy story, ‘Rumpelstiltskin’, which we’ve analysed and discussed here, Rapunzel’s story has striking similarities to other tales from around the world: in the 10th-century Persian tale of Rudāba, included in Ferdowsi’s epic poem Shahnameh by Ferdowsi, Rudāba is in a tower and offers to let down her hair so her lover Zāl can climb up to her. The only cure for Rapunzel and her beau is contrition and repentance, which comes in the form of her tears, which then restore his sight to him. It appears to have been considered unlucky to deny a pregnant woman any food that she craved, so if the mother of Rapunzel is already pregnant when she develops her taste for the forbidden rampion, one can understand the husband’s readiness to commit burglary in order to secure some of the food for his wife.Įveryone ends up punished for their lust: not just Rapunzel’s mother and father, but Rapunzel herself (who loses her beautiful hair and finds herself a single mother with twins to look after in a barren wasteland) and the prince (whose eyes had lusted after Rapunzel, so he ends up losing them for his trouble Sigmund Freud would no doubt say that this blinding, like Rochester’s in Jane Eyre, is a form of symbolic castration). It is this inability to control her desires that leads to her husband agreeing to forfeit their as-yet-unborn child to an evil witch. (In the original version, the witch discovers Rapunzel’s nightly trysts with the prince when she notices that Rapunzel has fallen pregnant.)Įven if we buy the Grimms’ reference to Rapunzel as the prince’s ‘wife’ in the bowdlerised version, and assume that they got married while she was still imprisoned in the tower, it probably wasn’t very wise to fall pregnant while trapped in a tower.įor another, the mother’s craving for rampion (or ‘rapunzel’) in the witch’s garden is ripe with sexual symbolism, suggesting a woman who is unable to control her lustful desires: her ‘appetite’ for the stuff leads her to nag her husband into agreeing to trespass into the forbidden garden, in a none-too-subtle echo of the Adam and Eve story (it’s all there: the garden, the man and woman, the forbidden zone, the inexplicable hankering for fresh produce). Yet the version we’ve summarised above is very much the child-friendly version which the Brothers Grimm published in 1857, rather than the original from 1812, although even the sanitised version contains signs of the more adult content contained in the original tale. The story of ‘Rapunzel’ is among the most famous fairy tales compiled by the Brothers Grimm. He takes Rapunzel and their children to his kingdom, where they proceeded to live happily ever after, as is often the way with these things. She weeps to see her lover without eyes, but when her tears fall on his face, his sight is magically restored. Replace it with the name in your language version if not english – ee Assignments panel. So if anyone have the same problem, here is the solution: I have been stuck with the same problem, but now found a solution with the help from a friend. Needless to say she screamed the house down. I gave her a copy of the ultrasound and said, 'Your brother or sister is making mummy sick'. She knew I'd been sick and, bless her, she was very worried about her mum. "My daughter is nine years old and we told her the day we got the first scan done. "We put a pacifier in wrapping paper and gave it to our parents like a present." Deacon After that, the announcement was made to all other relatives." Theepthi My in-laws called my parents and shared the good news. We live in a joint family of 20, and immediately the news was passed on from one family member to the each other. As soon as we came back, my smile said it all and my in-laws guessed right away. Everyone in our family was eagerly waiting for us. "I shared the news with my husband, and the very next day we met the gynaecologist. So, even though we live in different cities, it was great to see their reactions." Urvashi Telling your family"My husband and I shared the big news on a video chat with my in-laws and my mother. So he just patted me and gave me a light kiss." Roma He wanted to give me a big hug but thought he might hurt the baby. He came out with this big smile on his face. I kept the toys, the booklet and my positive pregnancy test on the bed and left the room. I made a small booklet with dialogues as if the baby is directly telling him about his arrival and decorated the room with things related to babies. I couldn't contain myself but didn't want to wake him. "When I found out I was pregnant, it was early morning, and my husband was asleep. So, in my story, it was my lovely husband who broke the news to me!" Hema I thought to myself, 'what is wrong with him and why is he acting like this?' He then showed me the result - it now had two lines, confirming pregnancy. Later, after some time, my husband started jumping and told 'Yahoo! I passed'. I kept the result in front of my husband and started pulling his leg, saying 'You failed!' "I took the home pregnancy test, and I couldn't find two lines. It took him a couple of minutes to realise what it meant, and he jumped with joy, like a little kid, as I stood watching him." Samaira Without saying anything, I handed it over to him, and he was clueless about what it could be. I brought chai for him and the envelope along with it. When he came back, I tried to act normal. I put it in an envelope along with the home pregnancy test strip, sealed the envelope and wrote his name on it. On it I wrote: 'Guess who's coming home? (Hint: In eight months from now)'. I decided to surprise him by making a little craft piece using paper quilling. I was very happy when I tested positive, but I didn't want to tell him over the phone. In the evening when he got home, he brought flowers and my favourite ice-cream." Kalpana He was totally speechless and for a couple of minutes, he didn't know how to react. He was a little surprised and looked at me with a blank face. I snatched his newspaper from him and hugged him. Telling your husband"My husband was reading the newspaper, as he usually does before getting ready for the office. Sharing that news can be a highlight of your early pregnancy, and watching your husband, family and friends react is a lot of fun. |
